Special Offers and Refunds

This page provides details of the special offers available at the present time, and describes our general policy on refunds for purchases of downloads.

Lecturers and Instructors: Please Note

College lecturers and instructors who open a Lecturer’s Account are automatically entitled to download free PDF copies of all our available material. For this reason, please note that we are NOT able to refund lecturers for purchased PDF copies of our books, except under our general Refund Policy for Purchases of Downloads (see below) in cases where no files have been downloaded. Refund Policy for Purchases of Downloads

If you have bought downloads but changed your mind about the purchase within 35 days of paying for it, and have never attempted to download the files for which you require a refund, please contact us to say that you would like a refund. We will check that you have not tried to download the files you bought and will contact you by email to ask you to confirm that you do not wish to download those files. Once we receive your confirmation – and providing that you have still not tried to download the files in question – we will remove those files from your downloads list and then provide you with a refund for their cost.

All refunds are automatically made to the same payment method – debit card, credit card or PayPal account – which you originally used to pay. In the same way as for special offer refunds, we never see any of your financial or personal details.

To summarise: with the exception of the special offers described on this page, we are able to provide a refund for purchases of downloads IF – AND ONLY IF – you have never attempted to download the files you paid for AND you contact us within 35 days of paying for those files.

Please note that the site records all attempted downloads made by customers. If you have attempted to download a file you bought but have had problems downloading, you will not be entitled to a refund but we will ensure that you receive the file you paid for. Please contact us if you have any problems downloading.

At the present time, distance selling regulations do not apply to downloads of digital content, and most retailers will not provide any refunds for downloadable digital content. A “cooling off” period as defined by law for distance selling of physical goods does not apply to digital downloads, which cannot be “returned”. All purchases of digital downloads are therefore considered to be final, and the refunds which we offer are exceptions provided as a courtesy to customers who change their minds before downloading, or are provided as part of a special offer.

Special Offer for Purchasers of PDF Chapters

Refund For Individual Chapters When You Buy Complete PDF Book
If you buy PDF chapters (together or at different times) of Web Design: A Complete Introduction or Digital Multimedia, 3rd Edition, and then buy the complete PDF of the same book, we will refund the price you paid for up to three (3) individual chapters of that book.

This offer is intended to help you assess up to three chapters of these large books before committing to buying the complete PDF, and to ensure that you are not charged twice for the same material.

This is how it works: if you buy the complete PDF of either Web Design: A Complete Introduction or Digital Multimedia, 3rd Edition, we check your account to see whether you have previously bought individual PDF chapters from the same book. If we find that you have already bought PDF chapters of the same book, we will refund the price you paid for up to three (3) individual chapters.

If you have bought more than three individual chapters of a book before buying the complete PDF of that book, we will refund the price of the three chapters you bought most recently.

If you bought one, two or three individual PDF chapters before buying the complete PDF of the same book, we will provide a full refund for the chapter(s) which you bought.

Unlike our general refund policy below, there is no time limit for refunds in connection with this special offer. For as long as the offer exists, we will refund the price of up to three individual chapters when you buy the complete PDF of the same book, no matter when you paid for the chapters. (If more than 45 days have passed since you bought the individual chapters, the refund can only be made to the payment method you used for the complete PDF, whether that is the same payment method used for the individual chapters or not.)

We are based in the UK, so if you contact us or are waiting for a refund in other parts of the world, please allow up to 24 hours for a response as we may be in a very different time zone from you.

Please be assured that we never see any details of the payment method you used – your debit card, credit card or PayPal account. The PayPal site enables us to make a refund direct to you without our knowing any details of the method you used to pay.

This offer applies whether you have already downloaded the individual chapters you bought or not.

Free PDF for Purchasers of Eligible MacAvon Media Paperbacks

Some paperback books published by MacAvon Media – including some titles in the Web Security Topics series – come with a special offer which allows the purchaser to claim a free PDF copy of that book through a MacAvon Media customer account. The PDF is not available in any other way.

This is how the offer works:

  1. Eligible MacAvon Media paperbacks have the free PDF offer advertised on the back cover of the book and in the Preface, with full instructions and a claim form at the back of the book.
  2. You need a physical copy of the printed book in order to claim your free PDF.
  3. Create a free MacAvon Media customer account if you do not already have one. All you need to provide is your email address and a password. N.B. It’s important that you use your true email address as we will send your your claim code to the email address registered to your account.
  4. When signed in to your account, click on “Your Downloads” on the top menu bar.
  5. Note your customer account number, which is shown under your email address.
  6. Enter your email address and customer account number in the claim form at the back of your book.
  7. Cut out the form, and post it to the address provided in the book.
  8. When we receive your form we wil contact you by email, and provide you with a special voucher code which enables you to add the PDF to your list of downloads, and download it at your convenience.

There is no charge whatever, other than the cost of the postage stamp. You do not need to provide any financial information at any time.

This offer is restricted to certain titles published by MacAvon Media, and does not apply to other Chapman & Chapman books.
